15) Sig: 1 tsp qid prn for cough & cold #4oz
What is the day supply?ANSWERS
1) 21 capsules > (Patient is taking Amoxicillin 500mg by mouth 3x a day for 7 days) 3 X 7 days = 21
2) 1050cc > (We need to figure out how many milliliters will be for 1000mg & 750mg)
If: 250mg = 5ml
Then: 1000mg = X ---------< 1000mg X 5ml / 250mg = 20ml
If: 250mg = 5ml
Then: 750mg = X ----------< 750mg X 5ml / 250mg = 15ml
20ml + 15ml = 35ml X 30 days = 1050cc will be dispensed for a 30 day supply
3) $145 > If 100 tablets = $420.00
Then 30 tablets = X --------< 30 tabs X $420.00 / 100 tabs = $126 for 30 tabs
$126 X 0.15 (15% / 100) = 19 ----------< $126 + 19 = $145 for 30 tabs in retail cost
4) 150cc > If 0.05mg = 1ml
Then 0.25mg = X -------< 0.25mg X 1 / 0.05 = 5 X 30 days = 150cc
5) (c)AR4695283 > (The first letter is always A or B / second letter is the letter of the Dr's last name)
1st: add 4,9,2= 15
2nd: add 6,5,8= 19 X 2 = 38
3rd: 15 + 38 = 53 (last digit (3) must match the last DEA number to be valid)
6) 700mg > If 500mg = 5ml
Then X = 7ml -------< 500mg X 7ml / 5ml = 700mg of APAP in a 7ml elixir
7) 45 days > (Sig: take 1 tablet by mouth 2x a day / for a quantity of 90 tablets to be dispensed)
1 tab by mouth 2x a day = 2 tablets a day ------- 90 tabs / 2 tabs a day = 45 day supply
8) 1 tablespoon > (Note: 5ml=1tsp / 15ml=1tbsp) (Sig: 90mg every 4 hours as needed)
Lets convert every 4 hours to find out how many times the patient will take in a day
24 hours / 4 hours = 6 x a day
If 30mg = 5ml
Then 90mg = X --------< 90mg X 5ml / 30mg = 15ml (1 tbsp) <<<<<<<<<< The patient will take 1 tbsp 6x a day
9) 2 tablets > (NOTE: grain to mg you would multiply by 60)
gr1/2 tablets is ordered : 1 divide by 2 = o.5 (its the same but easier to calculate decimals than fractions)
15mg tablets on hand
<0.5 X 60 = 30mg> <15mg + 15mg = 30mg> so therefore its 2 tablets
10) 5 grains(gr) > (NOTE: 1 grain = 60mg)
If 1 grain = 60mg
Then X = 300mg -------< 1gr X 300mg / 60mg = 5 gr
11) 10% > 30gm of paste contains = 3gm of drug
100gm of paste = X --------< 100 X 3 / 30 = 10% w/w
12) 5 days > Sig: 6 units every 12 hours for a quantity of 70 units
24 / 12hrs = 2 x a day
6 units X 2x a day = 12 units a day
70 units / 12 units = 5.83----< 5 days (insurance only except full day supply so no rounding)
13) 10 days > (NOTE: ear & eye drops have 20 drops per 1 ml) (they are usually packaged in a 10ml stock bottle)
Sig: 5 drops in right ear 4x a day for 7 days for a quantity of 10ml
10ml x 20 (gtts/ml) = 200 / 20 gtts (Sig) = 10 day supply
14) (a) 30 :roman numerals: I=1,V=5,X=10 (b)24 (c)0.4 [40% divide by 100] (d)20% [0.2 X 100]
15) 6 days > (NOTE: 1tsp = 5ml , 1oz = 30ml)
Sig: take 1 teaspoonful four times a day as needed for cough and cold for a quanity of 4oz
5ml X 4 tsp a day(Sig) = 20ml
If 1oz = 30ml
Then 4oz = X ------< 4oz X 30ml / 1oz = 120ml
